ESTABLISHMENT OF KANU LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (KALA)
The need to interrogate the societal, economic, and political factors that continue to undermine good governance efforts and reinforce existing patterns of exclusion that fuel disengagement is obvious and creating and environment and instrument to focus on the same. It is given that young people will, in future, bear the brunt of current decision-making. KALA’s envisaged institutional framework for the successful implementation of its aims and objectives, mission, vision and values include:

Mission & Vision
KALA recognizes there is a need for a conscious development of the right set of political leaders that can cope with the evolving challenges of statehood and nationhood. It is for this reason we have established KALA and hinged its core values on the following.

Aims and Objectives
It is envisaged that the KALA shall be a focal point for discourses on leaders for stimulated national, regional debates on socio-political and economic issues affecting Kenya, the continent and globally. The KALA initiative is organized around a series of interlinked activities with the following specific objectives:
Design and implement leadership programs, trainings, policies and processes that drive KANU party philosophy and ideals through a coordinated approach locally, regionally and internationally;.
Help emerging and young leaders to demonstrate creativity and ability to communicate their vision, inspire and ignite the passion of their people to achieve the best in a continuously changing political environment
Deliver leadership, knowledge, skills, tools, support and networks for the next crop of leaders
Create and sustain an active leadership community in KANU Party by facilitating the institutionalization of KALA and its activities and leadership programs across Kenya and internationally
Raise awareness and bring to the fore key leadership and governance issues in Kenya, East Africa and Africa as whole while providing sustainable proposals towards tackling them
Play a mentorship role to emerging leaders in the society through mentorship programs and to build a community of reputable individuals with outstanding moral and technical skills in Kenya, regionally and globally
Generate debates and discussions on pertinent but critical issues on inclusion of the young people in governance and leadership
Establish a vast network of emerging leaders with superior decision-making and innovative abilities who can deliver the best leadership in Kenya, the region and the continent through organised trainings

Start Now!KALA seeks to have a training framework that delivers from the grassroots to the national levels. Government, non-governmental organization, Youth groups, women groups and organizations, community based organizations, will all be part of KALA conversations at all levels. KALA will therefore focus on raising awareness of leadership and governance issues as a key driver of quality and relevance, capable of stimulating increased participation rates in political decision making.
KALA is therefore expected to stem important conversations with policy actors at all levels. The conversations focusing on emerging leaders are critical for an in-depth understanding of KANU Party as well as the enabling policy environment for embedding and sustaining democracy at all levels in Kenya. Engagement of policy actors is expected to help secure the broad based ownership necessary for uptake and replication of KALA across programme levels in Kenya and beyond. Further, KALA will raise the profile of KANU party as a driver of deepening democracy and governance in Kenya and on the continent.
KALA expects to recruit into the party, 50,000 emerging leaders every year, who will in turn be expected to recruit three others each. This essentially means that KALA shall receive 1.5 million recruitees every subsequent year or program session.
KALA shall seek to sensitize and or train and immerse participants in the process of self-reflection and discovery, innovation in democratic principles. The conversations shall empower the emerging leaders to question their assumptions about democracy and participation and to draw coherent rational beliefs that guide their practices within and without the country based on KANU philosophy and the party’s Manifesto. The envisaged conversations, workshops and trainings shall help to influence the participants’ ability to articulate or contribute more meaningfully towards attainment of expected governance issues within their communities. The courses to be delivered in form of modules are summarised below:

- Public Participation and Stakeholder engagement
- Environment and Climate Change
The mentorship programs, face-to-face workshops and training experiences shall be reinforced by synchronous and asynchronous learning exchanges and experiences on virtual platforms. Online engagement that facilitate intra and inter learner interactions within the wider community of practice around KALA. Virtual platforms shall actively support reflective practice, knowledge transfer and mentorship through identified professionals in various fields of practice.
Participants will be provided an opportunity to share their experiences and lessons learnt with other implementing KALA programs each year; which shall mark the end of the KALA mentorship and training cycle. In doing this, KALA shall collaborate with and other partners into a continuous process of improvement of its programs. The annual convening also shall serve to strengthen KALA network effects as well as linkage to relevant stakeholders.
Eligibility Criteria
There shall be two levels of certification for completion of distinct mentorship and training under KALA:
• Upon successful completion of the face-to-face session and online engagement activities, participants shall be awarded a KALA certificate of accomplishment on Leadership, Governance and Democracy.
• Upon completion of all training and related activities, reflective practice and Innovative leadership activities, participants shall attain a KALA fellow status attesting outstanding competence
Rationale
In contemporary democracies there is always a search for means that enlarge political participation and include more segment of citizens in decision making. To realize this issues deeply and entrench it, KANU seeks to establish KALA to broaden engagement and develop the next crop of leaders for Kenya, the region, continent and globally. KALA will be a yearly convening for current and future leaders and develop thinking and perspectives on different leadership issues. The engagement shall be starting every April and ending every November.
